Failure to Extend Epidural Labor Analgesia for Cesarean Delivery Anesthesia: A Focused Review

(Abstracted from Anesth Analg, 123(5):1174–1180, 2016) Epidural conversion is a process for cesarean delivery in which local anesthetic, commonly combined with a lipid-soluble opioid, is delivered to the patient via an existing in situ labor epidural catheter. It is not always successful, and failure often necessitates induction of general anesthesia, which is associated with higher risk of complications.
