Comorbid depression and diabetes — How can we improve adherence?

Medication adherence plays a critical role in the management of type 2 diabetes (T2D). Although many antihyperglycemic agents are available to effectively lower HbA1c, the full benefit of a given medication can only be realized when the medication is taken as prescribed. The existing evidence has consistently shown that adherence levels are suboptimal in patients with T2D —a meta-analysis of these data suggested that only 68% of T2D patients are adherent to their oral diabetes medications,1 while 64% and 62% of new and long-term users of insulin, respectively, are considered adherent.
