Anticonvulsant profile of the neuroactive steroid, SGE-516, in animal models

Since the discovery of phenobarbital in 1912 and the development of benzodiazepines in the 1950s, drugs that enhance GABAergic signaling have been used for the treatment of seizure disorders (Magiorkinis et al., 2014). In addition, over a dozen new pharmacotherapies with varying mechanisms of action have been developed to treat seizures in the last twenty years. Whereas these newer therapies have generally demonstrated improved safety and tolerability, approximately one third of patients with epilepsy continue to struggle with uncontrolled seizures (Tellez-Zenteno et al., 2014).
