Large bowel resection and anastomosis in a domestic rabbit following obstruction

A 3-year-old, male neutered rabbit was diagnosed with rabbit gastrointestinal syndrome after 3 days of anorexia and lethargy. Radiographic images revealed gas accumulation in the small intestines and cecum. Medical management was attempted but after 36 hours of medical and supportive care the patient became more lethargic and hypothermic. Repeat diagnostic imaging showed increased gas present within the intestines and the cecum. Exploratory abdominal surgery was performed and an obstruction of the proximal colon was identified along with an adhesion of the jejunum to the obstruction site.
