Can SGLT-2 inhibitors resolve the heart failure burden of diabetes mellitus — Is it empaglifozin or the class?

Patients with diabetes mellitus suffer from a sustained vulnerability of their hearts predominantly towards coronary atherosclerosis. Cardiovascular death due to perfusion disturbances remains the mainstay of diabetes related mortality.1 Over time this results from microangiopathic organ alterations following the diabetes specific metabolic alterations, atherosclerosis of the epicardial arteries and autonomic neuropathy affecting the regulatory band width of the diabetic heart under work load conditions.
