Recent developments in machine learning for medical imaging applications

Machine learning offers methods for automatic learning of complex patterns from empirical data and making intelligent decisions based on learned behavior. It has been well applied and recognized as an effective tool for researchers to handle the problems in medical applications. This becomes often necessary in the area of medicine, where the high dimensionality of data and highly variable environments make analytical solutions impossible and human-generated, rule-based heuristics intractable. In this special issue, the main focus is on the recent developments in machine learning methods for medical imaging applications.
