Intensity modulated radiotherapy, stereotactic body radiotherapy, image-guided radiotherapy, and volumetric modulated arc radiotherapy are all advanced treatment modalities that can potentially deliver escalating doses of radiotherapy to tumors while sparing essentially normal neighboring tissue and anatomic structures, thus minimizing both acute and long-term adverse effects. In addition, adaptive planning takes into account the change in tumor volume after treatment to reduce collateral damage to critical nearby tissue during future radiotherapy treatments.
