Multi-atlas pancreas segmentation: Atlas selection based on vessel structure

Automated abdominal organ segmentation from three-dimensional medical images is one of the essential components for clinical applications, such as computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) (Kobatake, 2007), computer-assisted surgery (CAS) planning and navigation (Azagury et  al., 2012). Pancreatic cancer has recently been increasing globally (Ito et al., 2013), and its mortality rate is the fourth among cancer-related deaths in Japan, 2011 (Matsuda et al., 2011). Because pancreatic cancer is difficult to treat and has such a high mortality rate, it would be benefici al to develop systems to automatically detect the pancreatic region for radiologists (Shimizu et al., 2010).
