Semi-Local Tractography Strategies Using Neighborhood Information

Emerging in the mid-1980s (Le  Bihan and Breton, 1985; Merboldt et al., 1985; Taylor and Bushell, 1985), Diffusion MRI is an imaging modality that has since been widely used for measuring the movement of water molecules in biological tissue in vivo. In fibrous tissue, for instance in human brain white matter, diffusion is know n to be fastest parallel to fibers but highly restrained perpendicular to the fiber orientation (Beaulieu, 2002). Thus, information about nerve fiber bundle orientation in the living human brain can be inferred from Diffusion MRI data noninvasively.
