How Low is Too High? At What Value Should We Start Treating Hypertension?

Hypertension (HTN) has long been described as a silent killer and is the leading cause of myocardial infarction (MI), strokes, and death globally.1 Oftentimes, the presenting signs of HTN are an MI or stroke that may have been prevented with adequate treatment. For this reason, screening for HTN has become routine in clinical practice. Through screening many individuals with borderline abnormal blood pressures (BP) are identified. While there is no doubt that treatment of HTN prevents cardiovascular (CV) events, the benefits of treatment at lower, borderline BP levels remains unclear.
