Leveraging Medical Taxonomies to Improve Knowledge Management within Online Communities of Practice: The Knowledge Maps System

Clinical practice should be informed by best evidence in order to provide safe, effective, standardized and up-to-date care to patients. Knowledge Translation (KT) provides strategies to incorporate best evidence and research findings into practice [1], and there are a variety of KT frameworks that stipulate conceptual and operational considerations for KT implementations in healthcare environments [2]. The spectrum of healthcare knowledge encompasses both explicit knowledge (published research literature and clinical guidelines) and experiential knowledge (the practical know how of healthcare experts acquired over years of practice).
