Vertebrae Localization in CT using both Local and Global Symmetry Features

Automatic segmentation and localization of organs and bones in x-ray, Computed Tomography (CT) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) images are essential for further visual processing or application in many image guided medical treatments. Vertebra is one of the most difficult bones to locate and segment precisely due to its complex shape and structure. Furthermore, spine shows various deformed shape or is frequently occluded by other organs. Therefore, automatic precise vertebrae localization is not a trivial problem and has involved many state of the art image processing and computer vision algorithms.
