Identifying, treating, and advocating for human trafficking victims: A key role for psychiatric inpatient units

The United Nations defines human trafficking as the “recruitment, transfer, harbouring or receipt of persons, by means of the threat or use of force or other forms of coercion, of abduction, of fraud, of deception, of the abuse of power or of a position of vulnerability … for the purposes of exploitation” [1]. There is an estimated 45.8 million women, men, and children around the world that are victims of human trafficking. In the United States alone there are an estimated 58,000 individuals who have been coerced or forced into servitude [2].
