Role of the molecular autopsy in the investigation of sudden cardiac death

Sudden cardiac death is a devastating outcome of a number of cardiovascular disorders and affects all ages [1]. The death is most often unexpected, can occur without prior symptoms, and has major implications for the surviving family. The prevalence of sudden cardiac death is significant, with at least 3 million people worldwide dying suddenly each year. In the United States, sudden cardiac death occurs in up to 350,000 people each year, translating to 950 deaths per day, or 1 death every 1.5min [1,2].
