The physical properties of dexmedetomidine (DEX, a selective α-2 agonist), midazolam (MID, a tranquilizer), and butorphanol (BUT, an agonist-antagonist opioid analgesic), make these pharmacologic compounds amenable to transmucosal absorption. Transmucosal delivery of DEX, MID, and BUT has been used in humans and some animal species. The goal of this cross-se ctional study was to evaluate the sedative and cardiorespiratory effects of the DEX/MID/BUT (DMB) combination in 8 healthy female intact New Zealand white rabbits (mean age 12 months ± 1 month).
