The meaning of “comfort” to elderly individuals living in long-term care hospitals

The elderly population comprises 13.2% of the entire Korean population (Statistic Korea, 2014), and 89.2% of the elderly are reported to have chronic diseases, suffering from an average of 2.6 diseases (Korea Institute for Health and social Affairs, 2015). Traditionally, the elderly in Korea were taken care of by the family. However, caring for the elderly is now recognized as a social responsibility because women's participation in the workforce has increased, the number of nuclear families has increased, and the birth rate has decreased.
