Review of hypertensive retinopathy

Hypertension is the leading risk factor for the development of cardiovascular disease in 32.5% of adults over the age of 20 years.1 Roughly, one-third of adults in the United States have a diagnosis of hypertension and only roughly half (52%) of these individuals have their blood pressure under control.1 Hypertension can damage the retinal, choroidal, and optic nerve circulations, thereby affecting both the anatomic and physiologic function of the eye.2
