Quality Improvement Initiative to Increase Consistent Use of Intraluminal Contrast in the Identification of Anastomotic Bowel Leaks on Computed Tomography, Using the Plan-Do-Study-Act Service Approach

Anastomotic leakage of bowel contents is a serious complication following intestinal surgery and occurs post-operatively in 1%-19% cases [1]. Morbidity from anastomotic leakage includes ileus, sepsis, renal failure, and multiorgan failure with a reported postoperative mortality of 24.1% of patients with a leak compared with 1.7% in those without [2,3].
