The impact of emerging infectious diseases on Chinese blood safety

Emerging infectious diseases (EIDs) have always been one of the major threats to public health. Although the implementation of mandatory testing on four classical transfusion-transmitted infectious (TTIs), including human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis C virus (HCV) and syphilis, has demonstrated its effectiveness to reduce the transfusion risks of these pathogens, the potential threats of various EID agents and their constantly evolving variants to blood safety in China are yet to be known.
