Steering between Scylla and Charybdis: Picking out the optimum time of Double-J stent removal following renal transplantation

Worldwide, the usefulness of stenting the ureterovesical anastomosis during renal transplantation was a debatable issue among renal transplant surgeons. Even more debatable is the appropriate post-transplant time-point to remove the Double-J stent (DJS), since stenting is efficient in securing ureterovesical anastomosis for early post-transplant urological complications but could also be a nidus for symptomatic urinary tract infections (UTI), especially in immunosuppressed patients. According to our view, the optimal time for stent removal is like being between Scylla and Charybdis, which is an idiom deriving from Greek mythology, meaning “having to choose between two evils”.
