Fine ‐needle aspiration versus core needle biopsy: Reconsidering the evidence of superiority

The choice of which invasive procedure to perform for pathologic diagnosis should be a careful analysis of the relative risks and benefits based on data rather than personal taste. Cytopathologists should take an active role in obtaining FNA samples which are adequate for both diagnosis and ancillary testing. This approach optimizes diagnostic accuracy and minimizes morbidity.
