Evaluation of model-based methods in estimating respiratory mechanics in the presence of variable patient effort

• A comparison of different methods for respiratory mechanics estimations during spontaneous and/or asynchronous breathing.• Models are evaluated using clinical data with samples of breathing cycles before and after sedation.• Different models have advantages and disadvantages, and the importa nce of these depends on the application for which respiratory mechanics is being used.• In general, a combined method of iterative interpolative pressure reconstruction and stacking multiple breaths has best performance over the dataset.
