Positive state observer for the automatic control of the depth of anesthesia —Clinical results

General anesthesia enables a patient to tolerate surgical procedures that would otherwise inflict unbearable pain, potentiate extreme physiologic exacerbations, and result in unpleasant memories. The components of general anesthesia are areflexia (paralysis), hypnosis (unconsciousness and amnesia), and analgesia (absence of any sensation, including pain). The depth of anesthesia (DoA) is related to the intensity of these two latter components and is achieved by the administration of two drugs: a hypnotic and an analgesic.
