A Location-to-Segmentation Strategy for Automatic Exudate Segmentation in Colour Retinal Fundus Images

Diabetic retinopathy is the main cause of blindness in working age population in the world Lim (1998). The World Diabetes Foundation estimates that over 438 million people will suffer from diabetic retinopathy by 2030. As the window to a person's body, retinal fundus contains rich anatomical structures, such as optic disk, vessels and macula, as Fig. 1(a) shows. Specifically, it provides an important manifestation of the presence of diabetic retinopathy. Traditional diagnosis process is to analyse the retinal fundus images and quantify the exudates according to the ophthalmologists ’ experience.
