LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA to be highlighted at Congressional Briefing

On Thursday, September 15, the LIVESTRONG Foundation and YMCA of the USA will be hosting a Congressional staff briefing in Washington, DC, about the importance of exercise for cancer survivors.Who will be at the Congressional briefing?The event is open to the public and those in the cancer community, but our primary audience is the staff for members of Congress.What makes this event important?Long held beliefs that “rest is best” after cancer treatment are being revised and growing evidence supports physical activity before,during, and after a diagnosis. We want to build awareness about the needs of cancer survivors and how exercise can be an important aspect of their recovery.Why isLIVESTRONGhelping lead this discussion?We have seen firsthand the impact of physical activity for cancer survivors and have been a leading voice on this issue for years. LIVESTRONG and YMCA of the USA partnered in 2007 to create a unique program to address the needs of cancer survivors. “LIVESTRONG at the YMCA ” is an evidence-based small group, 12 week exercise program available to cancer survivors to help them improve physical fitness, emotional health, and overall quality of life.  To date, the program has served almost 41,000 survivors and is offered at little or no cost to participants.LIVESTRONG at the YMCA has been proven to help survivors significantly increase their cardiovascular endurance and improve their overall quality of life.
