Sickle Cell Disease: Genetic Factors

Dr. Sherron Jackson, a specialist in pediatric hematology/oncology, explains sickle cell disease and the associated symptom of pain. She notes that sickle cell disease is a congenital, heredity illness that predominantly affects African Americans and other ethnic groups. Dr. Jackson addresses the importance of adult screening for sickle cell trait prior to becoming pregnant and provides information on how to undergo free screening.
