Gastrointestinal Disease: Visceral Hypersensitivity

Dr. Mark Delegge, director of the Digestive Disease Center at MUSC, discusses a syndrome referred to as Visceral Hypersensitivity. This disease tends to “masquerade” as other digestive diseases, when it is actually the nerves surrounding the intestines interpreting normal activity within the gut as intense pain. Dr. Delegge explains that while treatment of this condition is difficult, the use of small doses of some older anti-depressants to blunt the effects of Visceral Hypersensitivity has shown some promise as a potential treatment. He concludes by explaining the importance of continuing to investigate potential treatments for this condition and improving patients’ quality of life.
