A preliminary evaluation of trust and shared decision making among intensive care patients' family members

Although there has been much debate about what patient-centered care (PCC) is and how it can be fully implemented, PCC's central goal is to build and maintain provider-patient/family partnerships as an avenue toward effective shared decision making (IPFCC, 2015). Nowhere is the alignment of partnership with decision making so important as in the critical care setting where, for the 4.6 million adult patients admitted to ICUs annually, decisions are often risky and highly value-laden (Barrett, Smith, Elixhauser, Honigman& Pines, 2014; Davidson et al., 2007; Kon, Davidson, Morrison, Danis& White, 2016).
