Diagnosis and Treatment Strategies for Children with Myocarditis

Overview. Myocarditis is defined as an inflammatory disease of the myocardium, which results in cardiac structural and functional abnormalities secondary to cell injury and death. The true incidence of this condition is difficult to estimate secondary to a broad spectrum of clinical manifestations that range from asymptomatic patients with incidental lab findings to cardiogenic shock and sudden death. A recent evaluation of a large administrative database revealed that myocarditis accounted for 0.05% of pediatric discharges in the United States.
