Publication date: Available online 20 August 2016 Source:Pediatria Polska Author(s): Katarzyna Ita Bieńkowska The introduction of cochlear implants has changed daily life of people with profound hearing impairment as it allows auditive contact with the environment and gives them a possibility of mastering verbal speech, increasing their sense of security and giving them more leisure time possibilities. It has been more than 20 years since the first cochlear implant surgery took place in Poland. Initially, patients were satisfied with unilateral hearing. With time, the monitoring techniques have been improved and there has been significant progress in therapy, which made specialists pay attention to the difficulties characteristic of unilateral hearing, i.e., problems understanding speech in noise or sounds location. Research on neuroplasticity has shown the impact of unilateral stimulation on the ability of mastering a language, communication skills, and abstract thinking. Since 2010, it is possible to get a refund of the procedure for bilateral implantation by the NHS. The following article is a compendium of knowledge about bilateral implantation, which can be helpful for paediatricians. It focuses on topics discussed by patients and their careers before making a decision about the second implant.
