miRNA-101 supports the osteogenic differentiation in human dental follicle cells

The dental follicle is a loose ectomesenchymal derived connective tissue, which surrounds the developing tooth germ prior to eruption (Ten Cate, 1997). It is important for tooth root development and the coordination of tooth eruption and contains progenitor cells of the periodontium, which comprises the periodontal ligament (PDL), alveolar bone and the mineralized cementum (Morsczeck et al., 2005; Wise, 2009; Yao, Pan, Prpic,& Wise, 2008). Isolated human dental follicle cells (DFCs) are capable of differentiation into mineralizing cells.
