Introduction

The 20th century was notable for the development of many people and things, in several facets of life. Indeed, the evolution and progression of civilization in general was exponential during that time. In the field of medicine, developments were protean in nature between the years 1900 and 2000. They included the discovery of insulin, antibiotics, antihypertensives, and corticosteroids; the birth of modern anesthesia, transplantation medicine, and cardiothoracic surgery; the advent of increasingly sophisticated imaging techniques; availability of the first effective antineoplastic medications and several new antimicrobial vaccines; widespread implementation of electrocardiography; new techniques in neurosurgery and the neurosciences; an understanding of functional human immunology and how to modulate it; effective dialysis techniques for use in patients with renal insufficiency; refinements in ocular medicine and surgery; and advanced techniques in radiotherapy, among many others.
