Publication date: June 2016 Source:Apollo Medicine, Volume 13, Issue 2 Author(s): Himanshu Bhusan Sahoo, Bandana Rath, Jayanti Prava Behera, Chandra Sekhar Moharana Cefuroxime axetil is an oral cephalosporin class of antibiotic having broader gram-negative activity and used in infective conditions caused by facultative bacteria and anaerobes, such as respiratory tract infection, intra-abdominal infection, pelvic inflammatory disease, diabetic foot infection, etc. Severe oral eruption associated with swelling lips and mucosal erythema is not described previously as ADR due to cefuroxime. Here, we report a case of severe oral eruption induced by cefuroxime axetil. An adult male, 47 years of age, received tab cefuroxime axetil with tablet paracetamol for upper respiratory tract infection. Three days after ingestion of the aforementioned drugs, the patient developed severe oral eruption associated with swelling lips and mucosal erythema, and was admitted to the IPD, Dept of Medicine. This case was managed by withdrawal of both drugs with symptomatic therapy. So, it is important to recognize such a type of reaction and manage it to prevent fatality.
