Foreword

October is liver awareness month as designated by the American Liver Foundation. Toward this end, we are presenting this month ׳s issue on a vexing condition associated with a variety of underlying hepatic pathologies. Hepatorenal syndrome (HRS) is a unique progression of renal impairment initiated by fulminant liver failure usually associated with portal hypertension and ascites. Up to 40% of patients with cirrhosis will develop HRS with a median survival time of under 6 months.
