With more recent advances in cross sectional imaging technology, CT and MRI have largely replaced nuclear medicine studies for the initial diagnosis and characterization of infection. However, in specific clinical scenarios nuclear medicine continues to be an important technology for the localization and diagnosis of infection as a first-line test or as a secondary modality when other testing is nondiagnostic.
