A panoramic review and in silico analysis of IL-11 structure and function

Interleukin (IL)-11 is a multifunctional cytokine that was discovered almost 25 years ago. IL-11 has megakaryocytopoiesis activity, which led to its clinical indication for thrombocytopenia prevention in cancer patients. Due to its functional similarity with IL-6, IL-11 was less explored for many years. However, recently, IL-11 regained attention because its role in a diverse range of biological activities and diseases, especially in inflammations and cancers, were revealed. In this review, different aspects of IL-11 features, from structural points to clinical findings, are discussed, and bioinformatics tools are employed for a deeper investigation of this cytokine.
