PS011 Arterial Stiffness of Lifelong Japanese Pearl Divers

Japanese pearl divers specialize in free diving in the cold sea for collecting foods and pearls in oysters. Each diving maneuver produces the diving reflex. Exercising in the water combined with marked bradycardia and high blood pressure provides a circulatory challenge to properly buffer or cushion elevated cardiac pulsations. To augment the arterial compliance function, diving mammals have adapted the arterial structure such that the ascending aorta is about 3 to 4 times larger than their descending aorta.
