Health outcomes have been increasingly scrutinized as the best source of information about how to deliver optimal medical treatment. Indeed, evaluation of health care practice without outcome assessment can be readily criticized as lacking relevance. However, outcome evaluation, even for easily measured outcomes such mortality, requires data collection and complex analytical techniques for interpretation. On the other hand, before the technological advances of the modern world, including cardiovascular surgery, the patients with congenital heart disease had a desolate future.
