Surface Reconstruction for Planning and Navigation of Liver Resections

Liver cancer is the second most common cause of cancer death worldwide (Jemal et al., 2011). Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), which accounts for 70% to 80% of the cases (Vanni and Bugianesi, 2014), presents a 5-year survival rate below 12% (El-serag, 2011). Colorectal cancer metastatic to the liver, on the other hand, develops in 50% of the cases of colorectal cancer, and presents 5-year survival rates up to 58% for selected patients undergoing liver resection (Misiakos et al., 2011).
