Haplo Cord Transplantation – The Best of Both Worlds

Haplo-cord transplantation combines infusion of an umbilical cord blood unit with CD34 selected cells usually from HLA mismatched related donors. Initial rapid count recovery results from the haplo-identical hematopoietic progenitors, which in the majority of cases are gradually replaced by durable engraftment from umbilical cord blood progenitors. UCB grafts used for haplo-cord tend to be smaller, but better matched than those required for single or double UCB SCT. Over 200 patients with hematological malignancies have been transplanted at two institutions.
