Oscillations-free PID control of anesthetic drug delivery in neuromuscular blockade

• The problem of oscillations-free closed-loop drug delivery in neuromuscular blockade is considered for the case of PID control.• By means of bifurcation analysis, it is shown that oscillations can be avoided by properly adjusting the overall gain of the PID controller.• The time-varying gain neither affects the stability of the control system nor causes new nonlinear dynamical phenomena.• Three feasible recursive parameter estimation techniques, two particle filters and Extended Kalman Filter, are compared on synthetic and real data from surgery room exhibiting good performance.
