International pediatric cardiac efforts

Millions of children with congenital heart disease go without medical care throughout the world, especially in developing countries. It is estimated that only 7% of children with congenital heart disease have access to medical care. Efforts from major congenital heart centers in developed countries to participate in the care for and development of sustainable cardiac programs in these desperate countries are paramount to improving global health for children with congenital heart disease. Significant obstacles exist in developing these global programs including local government support, financial infrastructure and security, appropriate and continued training of medical professionals in the care of congenital heart disease, sustainability of resources, participation of non-government organizations, retention of skilled and trained care providers, and maintenance of essential performance metric to ensure quality of care and outcomes.
