Laser Tissue Welding

A tissue that is damaged or injured can be repaired /regenerated. Some tissue injuries can be repaired by simple methods as Stitches and staples. But as the scientific techniques are becoming more advanced, these Stitches and staples may be on their wayto becoming a thing of the past as we have a developing technology known as Laser Tissue Welding. This has the potential to produce stronger seals and expand use of this, alternative to conventional suture and stapling especially in intestinal surgery. In this standard laser tissue welding, a laser is used to precisely heat the body tissue at the edges of the wound. This helps the extracellular matrix of that tissue to change in its structure and form. Thus allowing the edges to seal together. Though it is a quicker procedure, though it heals faster, leaving less scarring than stitches and staples, the seals that are formed are not particularly strong. This will lead to a major problem like leaking of the contents. Especially in intestine, if the intestinal contents are leaked out then it may lead to fatal infections. Thus, in order to make the seals stronger, a new material known as Gold Nanorods – a Plasmonic Polypeptide Nano composite cross-linked with elastin-like polypeptides (chains of amino acids) is created. These Gold Nanorods act as seeds. When exposed to near-infrared laser light, the mixture sets, seals with the tissue, and takes on an elastic quality, these are wrapped inside a material so that it can move with t...
