Nanotechnology in Conjunction with Stem Cell Research

Regenerative medicine is an emerging multidisciplinary field that aims to restore or enhance the tissues and organ functions. Regeneration of tissues can be achieved by the combination of living cells, which will provide biological functionality, and materials which act as scaffolds to support cell proliferation. Human beings suffer from a myriad of disorders leading to organ failure. Stem cell research may be the last hope for restoring function. Stem cells in Nanotechnology are among the newest veins of biotechnological research. Nanotechnology is not only an excellent tool to produce material structures that mimic the biological ones but also holds the promise of providing efficient delivery systems. The role of nanotechnology in stem cell research is by focusing on several areas such as stem cell visualization, genetic modifications, reprogramming and therapeutic applications. Nanotechnologies can be a valuable tool to track and image stem cells, to drive their differentiation into specific cell lineages, and ultimately to understand their biology. The potential applications for nanotechnology in stem cell research are countless but there are three main categories that can be assigned to their use: •    Tracking or labeling •    Delivery •    Scaffold or Platforms Nanotechnology should cross barriers to fulfill the needs of regenerative medicine. Significant challenges remain pushing this field into clinically viable therapies. Tissue engineering has experie...
