Aspects of the music therapy practice: social and community context in perspective

This article proposes a discussion about the assumptions that are the foundation for the practice of music therapy as a way to make a meaningful impact in our community. Starting with a historic analysis, critical reflections about the main concepts that guide the practice of music therapy in the social context are drawn. The discussion introduces the term social and community music therapy with the intent to encompass fundamentals of psychology, specially the psychology based on a critical and social-historical dimension that considers human relations as a whole in a democratic action. Concepts as place, space and music therapy action are discussed. It is concluded that such practice promotes the change of social reality using sound as the instrument for interpersonal bonding in an active process based in the culture and in aspects of daily life.
