An examination of femicides in Peru between 2009 and 2014

Femicide is the lethal expression of violence against women for gender-based reasons [1]. Peru is an upper-middle-income country where 71.5% of women of reproductive age have been exposed to intimate partner violence of some form (psychological abuse: 67.5%, physical violence: 35.7%, and sexual abuse: 8.4%) [2]. Peruvian women are at risk of being battered, including fatal events. Femicide is often unreported and, consequently, the Peruvian National Registration for Femicides was created in 2009 by the Ministry of Women and Vulnerable Populations to combat violence against women (in addition to the Observatory on Crime of the Attorney General Office).
