Pitfalls in the diagnosis of tailgut cysts

Tailgut cysts are rare findings; when they do occur, it is usually in the retro-rectal space, arising from the failed regression of vestigial remnants of the embryonic hindgut. They occur most commonly in middle-aged women and with an overall female-to-male ratio of 3–4:1 [1].
