Although Poland is not considered an endemic country regarding ZIKV due to low temperatures, limiting Aedes mosquito survival, imported cases are possible. ZIKV infection represents both – clinical and diagnostic challenges due to similar symptoms to other mosquito-borne diseases which could lead to misdiagnosis. ZIKV infections in pregnant women and newborns are presented in the article, followed by modes of transmission, clinical manifestations and the diagnostic options, in the context of a role pediatricians should play in detection and reaction to potential threats. Physicians should advice patients declaring travels to areas of the Aedes mosquito activity, including those travelling with children as well as pregnant women (and those planning to become pregnant in the nearest future), to take necessary precautions to avoid bites.
