Adenosine Triphosphate stimulates differentiation and mineralization in human osteoblast‐like Saos‐2 cells

In conclusion, we show the osteogenic effect of ATP on both early and late stage activities like differentiation and mineralization, for the first time in human osteoblastic cells. In osteoblasts ATP can regulate several activities like cell proliferation, cell death, cell differentiation and matrix mineralization. ATP can increase alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity in a dose dependent manner as well as it can reduce cell proliferation in human osteoblast‐like Saos‐2 cells. ATP can affect mineralization in a biphasic manner inducing an increase of Calcium deposits at lower concentrations and a reduction of mineral deposition at higher concentrations.
