Birth & evolution of the desmoplastic small round-cell tumor

The landmark description of desmoplastic small round cell tumor was reported in 1991. The article described a series of 19 patients with small round cell tumors with a remarkable consistency in their clinical presentation and immunophenotype which suggested they represented a new and distinctive clinicopathological entity (Gerald, 1991). Although the reader could think this article is the original presentation of the disease, William L. Gerald and Juan Rosai first presented their proposal as a single intriguing case in an evening specialty conference at the USCAP meeting in 1988.
